Functions of the Department

 

The Kerala Drugs Control Department is entrusted with the responsibility of regulating drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices in the State to safeguard public health. The major functions of the Department include:


INSPECTION AND ENFORCEMENT

 

• Conduct inspections of drug manufacturing units, pharmacies, hospitals and other establishments dealing with drugs.
• Investigate complaints related to spurious,adultered or substandard drugs and cosmetics.
• Initiate Departmental /legal action against the offenders.

 

LICENSING AND REGULATION

 

QUALITY CONTROL

 

• Sampling of drugs, Cosmetics and Medical devices for quality control analysis to ensure their quality
• Initiate Departmental /legal action against offenders

 

SURVEILLANCE AND MONITORING

 

• Monitor the sale and distribution of antibiotics, narcotics/psychotropics/other drugs which are likely to be misused

 

CONSUMER PROTECTION AND AWARENESS

 

• Educate the public/ stake holders on the safe use of drugs and prevent the use of spurious or counterfeit or substandard drugs and cosmetics.
• Handle consumer complaints regarding Drugs, Cosmetics and Medical Devices.
